6. CONTENTS

The six days or periods of time, which are so many consecutive states in man's regeneration, are in general as follows:

7. The first state is the state which precedes, both the state existing from earliest childhood onwards and that existing immediately before regeneration; and it is called a void, emptiness, and thick darkness. And the first movement, which is the Lord's mercy, is 'the Spirit of God hovering over the face* of the waters'.

8. The second state is when a distinction is made between the things that are the Lord's and those that are man's own. Those which are the Lord's are called in the Word 'remnants', and here they are chiefly the cognitions of faith which a person has learned since he was a small child. These are stored away and do not come out into the open until he reaches this state. Nowadays this state rarely occurs without temptation, misfortune, and sorrow, which lead to the inactivity and so to speak the death of bodily and worldly concerns - the things which are man's own. In this way what belongs to the external man is segregated from what belongs to the internal. Within the internal are the remnants, stored away by the Lord until this time and for this purpose.

9. The third state is one of repentance, a state in which he speaks piously and devoutly from the internal man and brings forth goods, like charitable acts which are nevertheless inanimate since he imagines that they originate in himself. They are called a tender plant, then a seed-bearing plant, and finally a fruit tree.

10. The fourth state is when he is moved by love and enlightened by faith. Previous to this he did indeed utter pious words and bring forth good deeds, but he did so from a state of temptation and anguish, and not from faith and charity. Therefore the latter are now kindled in his internal man, and are called the two great lights.

11. The fifth state is when he speaks from faith and in so doing confirms himself in truth and good. What he brings forth at this point are animate and are called the fish of the sea and the birds of the air.*

12. The sixth state is when he utters truths and performs good deeds from faith and consequently from love. What he brings forth at this point are called a living creature and a beast. And because at this point he starts to act from faith and also simultaneously from love, he becomes a spiritual man, who is called an image. The spiritual life of that man finds its delight in, and is sustained by, the things which are associated with cognitions of faith and with charitable acts, which are called his food; and his natural life finds its delight in, and is sustained by, those which belong to the body and the senses. The latter give rise to conflict until love rules and he becomes a celestial man.

13. Not all people who are being regenerated reach this state. Some, indeed the majority nowadays, reach only the first. Some reach merely the second, others the third, fourth, or fifth. Seldom do any reach the sixth, and hardly anybody at all reaches the seventh.

14. THE INTERNAL SENSE

In all that follows the name THE LORD is used exclusively to mean the Saviour of the world, Jesus Christ, and He is called the Lord without the addition of the rest of His names. Throughout heaven He is acknowledged and worshipped as Lord, since He has all power in heaven and on earth. This He also commanded when He said,

You call Me Lord, and you are right, for so I am. John 13:13.

Furthermore after the Resurrection the disciples called Him Lord.

6. CONTENUTI

I sei giorni o periodi di tempo, che sono stati assolutamente consecutivi nella rigenerazione dell'uomo, sono in generale come segue:

7. Il primo stato è lo stato che precede, sia per lo stato esistente a partire dalla prima infanzia e di quella esistente immediatamente prima della rigenerazione, e si chiama un vuoto, il vuoto, e la fitta oscurità. Questi sono conservati lontano e non escono allo scoperto fino a raggiungere questo stato. Oggi questa condizione si verifica raramente, senza la tentazione, la sfortuna, e il dolore, che portano alla inattività e per così dire la morte del corpo e le preoccupazioni del mondo - le cose che sono proprie dell'uomo. In questo modo ciò che appartiene all'uomo esterno è segregato da ciò che appartiene a quello interno. All'interno sono i resti, conservati lontano dal Signore fino a questo momento e per questo scopo.

9. Il terzo stato è uno di pentimento, uno stato in cui parla piamente e devotamente dall'uomo interno e produce beni, come atti di carità, che sono comunque inanimati in quanto egli immagina che hanno origine in se stesso. Essi sono chiamati una pianta tenera, allora un seme-cuscinetto pianta, e infine un albero frutto.

10. Il quarto stato è quando si è mossi dall'amore e illuminati dalla fede. Prima di questo ha fatto davvero pronunciare parole pie e portare avanti le buone azioni, ma lo ha fatto da uno stato di tentazione e di angoscia, e non dalla fede e dalla carità. Pertanto questi ultimi sono ora accesi nel suo uomo interno, e sono chiamate le due grandi luci.

11. Il quinto stato è quando parla di fede e, così facendo, si conferma nella verità e il bene. Le cose che porta avanti a questo punto sono animate e sono chiamati i pesci del mare e sugli uccelli del cielo. *

12. Il sesto stato è quando egli pronuncia verità e compie buone azioni di fede e di conseguenza dell'amore. Le cose che porta avanti a questo punto sono chiamate una creatura vivente e una bestia. E perché a questo punto comincia ad agire dalla fede e contemporaneamente anche dall'amore, diventa un uomo spirituale, che è chiamato un'immagine. Nella vita spirituale l'uomo trova la sua gioia, ed è sostenuto dalle cose che sono associate con cognizioni di fede e con atti di carità, che sono chiamate il ​​suo cibo, e la sua vita naturale trova il suo diletto, ed è sostenuta da, quelli che appartengono al corpo ed i sensi. Quest'ultimo dà luogo a conflitti fino al dominio con regole d'amore e lui diventa un uomo celeste.

13. Non tutte le persone che vengono rigenerate raggiungono questo stato. Alcuni, anzi la maggioranza oggi, raggiunge solo il primo. Alcuni raggiungono soltanto il secondo, altri il terzo, quarto o quinto. Raramente alcuna raggiungere il sesto, e quasi nessuno affatto raggiunge il settimo.

14. Il senso interno

In tutto ciò che segue il nome IL SIGNORE viene usato esclusivamente a significare il Salvatore del mondo, Gesù Cristo, ed Egli è chiamato il Signore senza l'aggiunta del resto dei suoi nomi. Durante il cielo Egli è riconosciuto e adorato come Signore, poiché Egli ha ogni potere in cielo e sulla terra. Questo ha anche ordinato quando disse:

Voi mi chiamate Signore, e dite bene, perché lo sono. Giovanni 13:13.

Inoltre, dopo la risurrezione i discepoli lo chiamò Signore.
